Volodymyr Lytvyn, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, calls on the politicians not to use the events connected with the war for political speculations and incitement to mass disorder.
"Ukrainian politicians should be cured of ‘political itch.´ They are always trying to incite the people to disorder," V.Lytvyn stated in the interview to the Internet newspaper "Versii." He was asked how political confrontations connected with different attitudes to historical dates can be prevented.
V.Lytvyn admitted to the obvious attempts to divide the country into ‘friends´ and ‘foes.´ Along these lines, the Head of the Parliament called for reinterpreting the events of the war. "It is such a sensitive topic that it fell into the focus of political fights," V.Lytvyn declared. "It is used for speculations with public moods on the eve of the forthcoming parliamentary elections. I suppose that no ratings are worth it."
The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine warned against applying the conventional approach to assessing the war on the ‘friend or foe´ principle, as "the situation was much more complicated and dramatic, than the politicians can imagine." "I think that the war should be analyzed not in the light of theatre of war, attacks and prominent figures, but from the viewpoints of ordinary people: how they felt, what psychological changes they experienced, what choices were made. This method will help prevent polar conclusions," he stressed.
Asked how to prevent politicians-representatives of particular voters´ moods from dictating their opinions to the voters, V.Lytvyn responded that judicial bodies should watch whether the political parties act in a lawful manner. "However, it is necessary to consider the complicated past of the regions, understanding ‘the anatomy of hatred´ for particular historical events. On no account should Western Ukraine dictate its stereotypes and vision of historical events to the Eastern Ukraine, and vice versa," he stressed. "History belongs to historians."
The Head of the Parliament also called for finishing the ‘political war´, which started after the presidential campaign. "Otherwise, the country might sustain serious damage," he warned. According to V.Lytvyn, it is notable that the President of Ukraine initiated adoption of the act which states the uniting factors and sets the goals. The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine declared, "Today politicians should make clear what the current state of the country is, and what should be expected under particular development of events."
